How to Take Notes: Cornell vs Outline vs Digital — Which System Fits You?
Note-taking is the study skill everyone uses and almost nobody has ever been taught. The result is the most common failure mode in education: notes that are really just transcription — busy hands, disengaged brain, and a notebook that turns out to be useless three weeks later. Weakness: falls apart when the material itself is nonlinear or the lecturer jumps around; combining it with a quick margin-question pass (borrowed from Cornell) fixes most of its passivity risk.
System 3: Digital linked notes — the long game
Tools like Notion, Obsidian, and OneNote add two superpowers: search and links. The linked-note approach (inspired by the Zettelkasten tradition) stores one idea per note and connects related notes, so knowledge compounds across courses and years instead of dying in semester folders. Digital also welcomes images, audio, and pasted material — which is precisely its danger: pasting is not processing. Two rules keep digital notes honest: write entries in your own words, and add at least one link ("this connects to...") per note, because the link is where the thinking happens. Best for: long-term learners, research, and multi-course synthesis. Weakness: fiddling with the tool can impersonate studying.
Handwriting or typing?
Studies famously found handwriting beats typing for conceptual understanding — largely because slow writing forces summarizing while fast typing invites transcription. The honest conclusion: the advantage belongs to summarizing, not to pens. If you type, type slower than you can: bullet limits, own words, no verbatim sentences.
