How to Choose an AI Tutor: An 8-Point Checklist for Parents

AI tutoring has gone from novelty to mainstream in about three years, and parents now face a crowded market: subject-specific apps, general chatbots in "tutor mode," school-provided platforms, and premium services promising personalized learning. 1. Does it teach, or does it just answer?
This is the single most important test. Give the tool a math problem and watch what happens. A real tutor responds with guiding questions — "What is the equation asking? What did you try?" — and only escalates help gradually. An answer machine prints the solution. If your child can extract answers without thinking, the tool will actively harm learning while looking productive.
2. Can it handle "I don't get it"?
Good tutoring is re-explanation. Tell the AI "I still don't understand" three times in a row. A strong tutor tries a different angle each time — an analogy, a diagram, a simpler example — rather than repeating the same explanation louder. This is where cheap implementations fall apart.
3. Is it accurate in the subject that matters to you?
AI tutors are strongest in well-structured subjects (math, grammar, standard science) and weakest at the edges (advanced topics, local curriculum specifics, recent events). Test it yourself with ten questions from your child's actual textbook — including two or three where you know students commonly go wrong. Any tool that fails your ten-question audit fails, whatever its marketing says.
4. What happens to your child's data?
Read the privacy policy for four things: Is chat data used to train models? Can you delete your child's history? Is data sold or shared with advertisers? Is the service designed for minors (COPPA/GDPR-K compliant or your local equivalent)? An education-specific product with clear answers beats a general chatbot with vague ones.
5. Does it report to you?
The best services send parents or teachers a digest: topics practiced, time spent, concepts where the student struggled. This transforms the tool from a black box into a visibility tool. If there is no reporting at all, you are trusting a twelve-year-old's self-assessment of their own study habits.
6. Does it fit your child's actual gap?
Be honest about what the problem is. Falling behind in one subject calls for a mastery-based practice tool. Boredom calls for enrichment and challenge. Homework battles are often a motivation issue no app fixes. Anxiety before exams may need confidence-building repetition. "AI tutor" is not one product category — match the tool to the gap.
7. What does it cost — and what does free cost?
Excellent free options exist (Khan Academy's ecosystem is the standard reference). Paid services justify themselves through better subject depth, reporting, and curriculum alignment — or they do not justify themselves at all. Free general chatbots have a hidden cost: they are the most likely to be answer machines with weak data protections. Free is fine; unexamined is not.
8. Does your child still struggle productively?
After two weeks of use, watch for the meta-signal: is your child still willing to be stuck on a problem for a few minutes, or do they reach for the AI at the first hint of friction? Productive struggle is where learning happens. The right tool preserves it; the wrong tool trains a reflex to outsource thinking. If you see the reflex forming, tighten how the tool is used — for checking work after attempting it, not before.

A good AI tutor is patient, available at 10pm before the test, and infinitely willing to re-explain — real advantages no human tutor can match on availability alone. But the technology only works inside a structure: clear rules about when to use it, a parent who occasionally reads the reports, and a family culture where "I figured it out myself" still counts for something.
